Telling a story

Brighton Photography Blog Telling a Story 2

Everyone loves a story.

We often think of stories in terms of books or films, but photos can tell a story too. I usually think think of my photos as individual moments, so I wanted to see how this would translate into more of a sequence.

A couple of weeks ago my family and I met some friends and their son at the Brighton under cliff walk. This is a lovely stretch of Sussex cliff that runs from Brighton Marina in the West to Saltdean in the East, it’s extremely popular for family summer walks and bike rides. The day was made all the better by the lovely sunny weather we have been having! Although my daughter and my friends son have met before, being so young they wouldn’t have remembered each other from several months back. So I was unsure how much they would interact or chat with each other.

Thankfully they got on extremely well and were happily playing. I love capturing natural, honest photos so I took a few snaps throughout the afternoon of them interacting. Of the photos I took there was a set which stood out of them holding hands - my daughter was unsure at first about holding hands, but was encouraged by him to walk along together.

  • The first image shows her uncertainty at joining hands. She was showing a real interest in wanting to play but not knowing him too well meant she was unsure

  • In the second she becomes more confident and takes his hand, for him to lead her forward and start their walk together

  • In the final shot, both of them are really at ease and enjoying each others company on their little stroll

Across the three images I think it really captures these natural moments, and linked together tells the story of two little toddlers starting a new friendship.
